Many must-see sights in Scotland are only a short distance from Edinburgh.
Below are some of our suggestions for day trips outside the city, all of which can be reached quickly and affordably by taxi.
North Berwick is a pretty coastal town situated 25 miles east of Edinburgh. Visitors are particularly drawn to North Berwick for its golden sandy beaches and expansive views over the Firth of Forth. Other attractions include boat trips to Bass Rock where seabirds and seals can be spotted, coastal golf courses, shops, cafes and galleries. For those who love walking, North Berwick Law, a volcanic hill that towers over the town, is well worth the climb to the top for the panoramic views of East Lothian.
It takes less than an hour by car to get to the big, bustling city of Glasgow from Edinburgh. This is a worthwhile trip to make if you have exhausted your purchasing potential in Edinburgh; most would agree that the shopping in Glasgow is far superior. Outside the main shopping precinct, there are attractions aplenty including the Museum of Transport, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Science Centre and Glengoyne Distillery. If you plan to extend your day trip into the evening, a vibrant nightlife awaits!
Linlithgow is a great location for a day trip from Edinburgh, located just 20 miles west of the capital city. A haven for history enthusiasts, Linlithgow Palace is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. Although badly damaged by fire in 1746, the Palace walls remain largely intact and are well maintained. The attraction is open to visitors all year round. Boat trips along the Union Canal provide a different view of the town. On drier ground, Linlithgow high street has a number of interesting shops, pubs and a monthly farmers’ market.
